A Serious Accident Reported Concerning Black Elk Energy
In one Gulf Oil accident, four workers were critically injured after a fire and explosion on a Black Elk Energy rig that was located off the coast of Louisiana. Two people also died in this accident. At the time this accident, crews were performing maintenance and the fire was started by a blowtorch that cut a pipe which contained up to 75 gallons of oil.
The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement later issued a report after reviewing physical evidence from this accident. The Bureau has various regulations place that are designed to prevent these explosions. The company determined that Black Elk Energy performed communication failures and failed to properly supervise employees which greatly contributed to the occurrence of the accident.
