The Joint Forces Training Base – Los Alamitos was previously operated by as a naval air station. - A case in 2010, a Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded an enormous amount to a 71-year-old woman who contracted second-hand mesothelioma from the asbestos dust on her husband’s work uniform. Her husband cut asbestos cement pipe for the City and County of Los Angeles. The woman received a large amount in compensatory damages. Her husband was awarded a lesser but still significant amount in loss of consortium. The family was also awarded a gigantic sum in punitive damages.
- In November 2018, a Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded a 65-year-old man a huge sum of money who had been exposed to asbestos while supervising workers who cut and beveled the defendant’s pipe, which caused asbestos fibers to become airborne and inhaled by the man. The award included punitive damages, compensatory damages, damages for the man’s pain and suffering and a sizable amount to the man’s wife for loss of consortium.
- A Los Angeles jury awarded a woman a massive amount who alleged that she developed mesothelioma cancer from using Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder product. 6,000 other cases against the manufacturer for claims alleging that the baby powder product caused ovarian cancer.
- A Los Angeles jury awarded an immense dollar figure in April 2018 to the surviving family of a man who installed and cut asbestos cement pipe. The award included another large amount in punitive damages, but this portion of the award was later reduced by a judge.
- In September 2018, A Los Angeles County jury awarded a substantial amount to the son of a pipefitter who was exposed to asbestos due to the defendant’s boilers containing asbestos insulation, eventually causing the man to develop mesothelioma and die from the disease.
- A Los Angeles jury awarded a banker who had renovated a house since the 1960s a hefty amount. The jury found that joint compound, caulk, stucco, roof cement and decking materials the man used in the renovation contained asbestos and the product manufacturers were responsible for the damages the man sustained.
