Pearl Harbor Shipyard Navy Veterans & Mesothelioma

The beginnings of the Pearl Harbor Shipyard date back to 1842 when the site was used as a coaling station. In 1891, President Harrison encouraged Congress to develop Pearl Harbor into a naval station so that the Navy could expand its production of warships. Congress ultimately designated the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard in 1908. The site continued to grow during the first quarter of the 20th century. Pearl Harbor Shipyard is the largest ship repair facility between the Far East and the West Coast, covering more than 300 acres of land and 177 buildings. Because of the prominent use of asbestos in the ships, individuals who worked at this facility could have been exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos.
