Texas passed the “Move Over Law” in 2003, which requires drivers to move over a lane or to slow down when certain vehicles are stopped on the road and have emergency lights on. The vehicles that trigger this response include:
- Police vehicles
- Fire trucks
- EMS ambulances and vehicles
- Texas Department of Transportation vehicles
- Tow trucks
If it is safe for a driver to do so, it must leave the lane that is closest to the stopped emergency vehicle. Otherwise, the driver must slow 20 mph below the posted speed limit.
Despite how long this law has been in place, many people are unaware of it, and accidents have occured. Many emergency responders are hoping that additional laws will pass, such as allowing tow trucks to have rear facing blue lights that can help other drivers spot them and avoid an accident.
