Veterans Diagnosed with Mesothelioma Near Wichita Kansas

Wichita is home to the still-active McConnell Air Force Base. The Kansas National Guard 127th Observation Squadron was activated as the first military unit assigned to the base in 1941. Today, the base’s primary objective is to provide global reach by providing air refueling and airlift. Wichita was also home to a missile base.

Air Force members were often exposed to asbestos because this product was contained in the products and vehicles that military members used. Mechanics and those who worked in maintenance were at an increased risk for asbestos exposure.

Wichita Asbestos and Mesothelioma Lawsuits

Due to the state’s extensive tort reform, there are not as many lawsuits regarding asbestos exposure filed in Kansas when compared to other states. One exception was the 1996 case of City of Wichita v. National Gypsum Company in which the city sued the major manufacturer of asbestos-containing building materials that the city purchased and used in its construction of the city’s civil cultural center. On appeal, the court found that the company fraudulently misrepresented the existence of asbestos in the products and concealed health concerns.
