Veterans Exposed to Asbestos Near Hastings, Nebraska and Diagnosed With Mesothelioma

The Hastings Naval Ammunition Depot was established in 1942. This was the largest United States World War II naval munitions plant. Between 1942 and 1946, the plant produced more than 40% of the Navy’s munitions. It was one of four major ammunition plants in Nebraska, the others being the Cornhusker Ordnance Plant, the Martin Bomber Plant and the Nebraska Ordnance Plant. It consisted of 49,000 acres of land and more than 2,000 buildings, bunkers and other structures.

The site for the plant was chosen due to its proximity to three railroads in the area, nearby water, affordable gas and electricity and its stable workforce. After World War II, work was lessened at the site and employees were laid off. During the Korean War, the depot was reactivated. Part of the basis was turned over to the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. The base was ordered closed in December 1958. After that time, portions of the property were occupied by the Central Community College, Hastings East Industrial Park, the United States Department of Agriculture Meat Animal Research Center and the Greenfield Training Facility.

This depot is a suspected source of asbestos exposure. Individuals who worked at the base during its operation may have been exposed to asbestos. However, even individuals who worked or used the facilities that later took over the site may have been exposed to asbestos. Asbestos may have been contained in construction materials at the site, including in drywall, insulation or tile materials. When these buildings were renovated, damaged or demolished, airborne asbestos fibers could have been dislodged and inhaled by individuals around them.
