Military Veterans Exposed to Asbestos in Near Bend Oregon

Coast Guard Air Station North Bend is responsible for overseeing all operations of Group North Bend units, consisting of more than 220 miles of the Oregon coast. It provides administrative, communication, engineering, supply and medical services. This base consists of Motor Life Boat Stations, an air facility, an air station and an Aids to Navigation Team. This base is relatively new in terms of the Coast Guard, being established in 1974. Coast Guard members at the base enforce maritime laws, provide aids to navigation, conduct search and rescue activities and help protect the marine environment. They also help with necessary evacuations.

Another base, the Kingsley Field Air National Guard Base, is located approximately two hours from Bend, Oregon. This base was built in 1928 and is the home base of Oregon Air National Guard’s 173d Fighter Wing. An airport was initially installed, and this site was selected for a Naval Air Station in 1942. In 1954, it was later selected as a site for a United States Air Force base and the naval air station was placed under the control of the Air Defense Command. Later in 1978, the facility was transferred to Air National Guard control for fighter operations. The Oregon Air National Guard has had control of the base ever since.

Asbestos was once used by all branches of the military, including the U.S. Coast Guard and the Navy. This material was affordable, durable and resistant to heat and fire, so it served many practical purposes in the military, including as a construction material in bases and as part of components in military vehicles. Military maintenance personnel, mechanics and others who worked closely with asbestos may have been exposed to this dangerous material.
