Veterans Exposed to Asbestos Near Lancaster Pennsylvania

There are two military bases within a two-hour range from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. One is the Letterkenny Army Depot Army Base in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. This base is comprised of 17,500 acres and is considered one of the biggest employers in Franklin County. It was established in 1941 as an ammunition depot just days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was responsible for storing more than 3 million tons of supplies during World War II. The depot continued to serve multiple purposes during times of conflict and more buildings were added to it, including an ammunition demilitarization facility, the addition of the automatic storage and retrieval system-plus and the Center for Technical Excellence. Today, more than 2,800 Army personnel, contractors, civilians and change agents work at the base.

JRB Willow Grove Navy Base in Horsham Township is a former Naval Air Station that was established in 1926. It was used for small testing and design operations. During World War II, a secret warfare program to fight offensive submarines was launched at the base. It was later turned into a joint reserve base and was responsible for training and maintaining a reserve group. The base was ordered closed in 2005 but continued until 2011.

People who worked in the Army or Navy were at possible risk for asbestos exposure, and a mesothelioma diagnosis, because this material was used to construct military bases and was also used in thousands of components in ships and military vehicles.

Veterans can find out about the benefits that they qualify for by contacting a representative at the Lancaster Vet Center.
