Newport Naval Yard and Naval Station Newport

Shipyards are one of the most notorious sites for asbestos exposure. Shipyards have exposed individuals to asbestos since the 1930s. Asbestos-containing materials were used to build ships and insulate boilers aboard them. Individuals who built ships or worked on them between the 1930s and 1970s could have been exposed to asbestos. The Newport Naval Yard was one potential source of asbestos exposure. It was constructed in 1861 to protect Union ships during the Civil War. The Naval Operating Base occupied this same location between 1941 and 1946. This site has been used to maintain inactive Navy ships. Additionally, the Naval War Academy and the Naval Underwater System Center are currently located at the site.

In 2010, a demolition project at Naval Station Newport resulted in three citations for violating federal asbestos laws. The EPA found that Naval Station Newport violated the Clean Air Act and the National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants and fined it and two other companies more than $14,000.
