The missiles would have to be ready to launch within 15 minutes in case of an attack. One such site was Coventry, followed by Woonsocket, Quonset Point, Foster, and North Smithfield. Several hundred bases of this nature were also built across the country. The National Guard was responsible for commanding each site. Members of the Rhode Island Army Guard received specialized training and working the radar installations and missile sites. The Coventry launch site was ultimately abandoned in the mid-1960s because advanced technology replaced the site’s missiles.
