Nashville TN Flood and Asbestos Exposure

In May 2010, a serious flood raged through Nashville and the surrounding area. This resulted in damage to more than 11,000 properties. The Nashville Mayor’s Office Recovery Team warned homeowners to be careful when removing flood debris because asbestos could be present in homes and buildings constructed before 1980. The Rose of Sharon Primitive Baptist Church experienced two feet of flood waters. Volunteers at the church cleared away carpets, drywall and other materials but soon experienced respiratory and skin problems. Code enforcement agency was then called in and asbestos and other dangerous contaminants were found. An asbestos abatement company was called in to finish the job. It took nearly a year for all of the asbestos to be removed from the church.
