Tacoma Military Bases; Veteran Asbestos Expsosure; Mesothelioma Diagnosis
Tacoma has a rich military history. McChord Air Force Base was established in 1930, originally as an Army Airfield. It was primarily used for security purposes until World War II when bombardment units were sent to the base to attack submarine patrols. Units from this base were deployed and participated in the infamous Doolittle Raids in Japan. In 1947, the base came under the command of the newly established United States Air Force. Today, the base is half of the Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The other half is made up of the Army garrison of Fort Lewis. The joint base is under the command of the United States Army and Air Force. It is home to the C-17 Globemaster III, which is used to provide strategic air drops and medical evacuations.
Near the joint base is Camp Murray, which was established during the Indian War of 1855. The base was active during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Berlin Wall crisis, the Vietnam War, the Iraq military operation, the Afghanistan military operation and other key points in history. Today, the base serves as home to the Washington State Guard, the Washington Army National Guard and the Washington Air National Guard.
Older military bases like those in Tacoma could have exposed servicemembers and civilian employees to asbestos because this material was used to construct bases and was also used in components of military vehicles and aircraft.
