Veteran Asbestos Exposure Near Cheyenne Wyoming

The Francis E. Warren Air Force Base is located in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It is one of only three strategic missile bases located in the country, located between Mexico and Canada. The main base spans approximately 6,000 acres. Satellite remote missile bases in Nebraska and Colorado add more than 12,000 acres to the territory of this unique base.

The base has been used for military purposes since the 1800s. It was converted to the current base in 1949. It is the permanent station for the 20th Air Force. The primary mission of the base is to support the 20th Air Force in defending the nation and with global logistics of worldwide strike capabilities.

LGM-30G Minuteman Intercontinental Ballistic Nuclear Missiles are located at this base, which are the only land-based ICBM’s that the United States operates. The base is the command and headquarters of the U.S. ICBM Wings.

The base is designated as a National Historic Landmark due to the antique red brick buildings that are on the base. These buildings have survived decades in Wyoming.

Old buildings are often a source of asbestos since asbestos use was not regulated until the 1980s. Many military bases were constructed in part by materials made of asbestos. As a result, military workers and civilian employees were often exposed to asbestos.
