Researchers at the Jules Verne University reported at the 56th Renal Association-European Dialysis and Transplant Association Congress show a significant increase in acute kidney injury and death for patients with chronic kidney disease who used a proton pump inhibitor. Ultimately, researchers ultimately concluded that regular use of proton pump inhibitors need to be identified and carefully evaluated in patients with this medical condition.

About the Study and Its Findings

The study analyzed 3,023 patients who had CKD, stages 3 to 5. About 32 percent of the patients had been prescribed proton pump inhibitors prior to the study. Researchers reached the following significant findings:

  • Patients who used proton pump inhibitors had a 54 percent greater risk for acute kidney injury, compared to patients who did not use the inhibitors
  • Patients who used proton pump inhibitors had a 35 percent greater risk for death, compared to patients who did not use the inhibitors
  • Patients with chronic kidney disease, stages 3 or 4 had 347 acute kidney injury events during the period of the study
  • End-stage renal disease developed in 334 of the study patients
  • 258 patients died before developing end-stage renal disease
  • Proton pump inhibitors were not associated with a greater risk of end-stage renal disease
  • Acute kidney injury episodes mediated the association between proton pump inhibitors and death
