Navy Veterans Who Worked in Portsmouth Ship Yards, and Now Have Mesothelioma
The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard facility is located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It was established in 1800 to repair and build Navy ships. Over its history, it held prisoners of war, repaired vessels damaged in battle and built new ships for the fleet. The shipyard was one of the most active repair and construction facilities during World War II and after this time. Today, the shipyard is primarily responsible for maintaining, repairing and upgrading Los Angeles Class Attack Nuclear ships. The base consists of 278 acres with 376 buildings, including multiple dining halls, clubs, fitness facilities, mental clinic, dental clinic, schools and shopping center.
The shipyard employed many New Hampshire residents to build and repair Navy ships. It also keeps on-staff experts on structural, internal and engine repair. Shipyards like Portsmouth Naval Shipyard were some of the most highest-risk areas for mesothelioma and asbestos exposure during the 1900s because asbestos-containing materials were commonly used as insulation for the ships themselves, as well as the machinery aboard them. In 1993, asbestos insultation was discovered at the site. Inspectors also found more than 30 acres of the shipyard were storing hazardous waste. Cleanup efforts finished in 2003.
