Veterans Exposed to Asbestos in Military Bases Near Canton, Ohio

Near Canton, Ohio is the Integrated Support Cleveland Coast Guard Base. Although the site was commissioned in 1996, the command is much older. It consists of four divisions. The Force Optimization is responsible for training sessions. The Comptroller, Personnel Services and Worklife divisions round out the other ones. The mission of this base is to support deployed Ohio units of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Coast Guard veterans were exposed to asbestos at the same rate as Navy members, which has the highest rate of mesothelioma incidence of all branches of the U.S. military. Because asbestos is resistant to heat and corrosion, they were used to build ships and bases. Coast Guard service members who served during World War II were at the greatest risk of being exposed to asbestos and developing mesothelioma. Many members of the Coast Guard worked in shipyards where asbestos was used to insulate and fireproof vessels. Members who completed shipyard insulation work, cargo ship inspection and boiler and engine room maintenance were most at risk of exposure.
