Virginia Mining and Threat of Asbestos Exposure

Mines throughout Virginia placed surrounding communities at risk for asbestos exposure, including two former asbestos mines in the Blue Ridge near Richmond and Virginia Vermiculite, LLC in Louisa County, which operates one of the last open pit vermiculite mines in the country. Vermiculite often forms alongside asbestos, such as in the contaminated Libby mines that shipped vermiculite across the country. The Mine Safety and Health Administration conducted a study in 2000 and found asbestos in 30 air samples and 12 rock samples from Virginia Vermiculite. Seven of the rock samples contained what were considered high levels of asbestos.
